Caterpillar, Chinalco Guangxi and China Engineers Ltd.: Partnership Over Two Decades
Aluminum Corporation of China (Chinalco) is the largest nonferrous metals enterprise in China, and the second largest alumina producer in the world. Its Guangxi branch, which focuses on mining, alumina and electrolytic aluminum production, is the biggest and most profitable mining and smelting enterprise in China. It has earned this reputation in spite of its location in a very challenging mining environment.
The distinctive topography of the Guangxi region ranges from sinkholes, vertical shafts, disappearing streams and springs, to complex underground drainage systems and caves. Shallow and thin layers of ore are spread throughout the site, which requires mining operations to cover a large area. The scattered mineral occurrence makes it difficult to form major transportation routes, and the rainy conditions keep roads wet and muddy most of the time. The intense and rough conditions create a number of challenges for the equipment used in mining operations and reclamation.
The site’s equipment fleet was chosen with these conditions in mind. A fleet of 12 Cat® 745C Articulated Trucks delivered in late 2015 joined a dozen Cat 740 Articulated Trucks that have been successfully handling the rough terrain since 2010. The trucks join about 20 other pieces of Cat equipment—including dozers and hydraulic shovels — supported by Cat dealer China Engineers Ltd (CEL).
The support of Caterpillar and CEL has been recognized by Chinalco as a key contributor to its success. The partnership began in 1993 with the purchase of Cat D10N dozers. The performance of these dozers — as well as the durability, productivity and low costs delivered by the Cat 740 trucks — solidified the company’s faith in Cat products and inspired Chinalco Guangxi to make its most recent purchase. The new 41-tonne (45.2-ton) 745C articulated trucks offer increased capacity as well as some updates and improvements over the Cat 740 trucks.
During the ceremony commemorating the delivery of the most recent articulated trucks, Wei He, director of the Guangxi branch’s Pingguo mine, emphasized his confidence in Cat products and gave credit to the professional services provided by CEL. At the same time, CY Shiu, managing director of CEL, reaffirmed the dealership’s commitment to supporting Chinalco Guangxi’s development.
CY Shiu was joined by Caterpillar’s Levee Cai, general manager of surface mining and technology for China and India, who presented a Cat truck model and a golden key to Wei He. Levee Cai recognized the excellent service provided by CEL and also expressed his appreciation to Chinalco for its faith in Cat products. The company combines its world-class machine fleet with advanced technologies, the support of an open-minded management team, and the expertise of its professional technical team to achieve ongoing success.
Following the delivery ceremony, attendees visited the mine site to see the equipment in action. Afterwards, Caterpillar, CEL and Chinalco Guangxi executives participated in a high-level strategic cooperation discussion to explore future opportunities.
