Helping workers understand and prevent fatigue
While new technologies are helping mine sites around the world better manage and mitigate the risks of operator fatigue, workers need to understand what they can do to reduce the likelihood of excessive tiredness, poor decision-making, reduced coordination and slowed reaction times.
Caterpillar Safety Services recently developed an Employee Fatigue Handbook that helps workers understand how their decisions impact the quality and quantity of their sleep so they can make positive changes. The handbook provides specific, actionable ideas for sleep management and improvement. It was developed specifically for shift-work and fly-in-fly-out employees who operate on rosters, work in physically demanding locations, undertake strenuous activities, and travel extensively to and from work.
The handbook teaches employees:
- How to combat fatigue at work
- How to prepare for nightshift
- The impact fatigue is having on their performance
- How to get a better night’s sleep
- How to prevent fatigue
